What is Giclee Printing?

Giclee printing is the process of printing a single reproduction with large format digital printing equipment capable of high resolution and quality. In French, giclee means "to spray ink," and is pronounced "zhee-CLAY." Often the term giclee is used when referring to fine art reproduction, artwork reproduction, and photo reproduction. The quality of giclee printing is so fine that it is often used to render museum-quality reproductions suitable for close examination. Giclee printing produces the finest possible reproductions.

Is Giclee Printing Different from Digital Printing?

Giclee printing is digital printing! There is no difference between giclee printing and digital large format printing, except that the term "giclee printing" usually refers to paintings, drawings, watercolors, photographs, or other works of art that are intended to be reproduced with exceptional accuracy. Giclee printing ensures maximum quality, so use giclee when the printing will be viewed closely.

Giclee Printing on Large Format Digital Printers

The printers used for giclee printing are usually large-format digital printers that use 6 or more giclee ink colors. These printers are capable of giclee printing on large size media compatible with giclee standards. This allows giclee methods to accurately reproduce fine art, paintings, photos, and other works of art that exceed traditional printing size and aren't possible without giclee. Medias commonly used when giclee printing are artist canvas, fine art paper, textured fine art paper, and glossy photo paper.
